The footage

of Saddam Hussein’s hanging have been playing on my mind. I am deeply shocked at a) when it happened, b) how it came to pass, c) the fact it was filmed, and d) the logic that deemed it necessary to show on evening news bulletins.

I’ve been trying to formulate a post on it, but it just seemed so, infantile, in my attempts to put my thoughts to an increasingly complicated, complex situation.

Then I read the piece by the author Bob Ellis in yesterday’s The Sydney Morning Herald and it really said what I felt far more eloquently that any of my attempts.

I’ve been trying to run from the Saddam coverage for DAYS now and it’s nearly impossible. Tell me, why does MSN need it on their cover page? I can see putting it on MSNBC but NOT MSN. Grrr.

I was kind of prepared for the discussion with Felix about what hanging is etc., I just wasn’t prepared for the 6pm nightly news bulletins to carry images of him having the noose put around his neck.

You can understand why kids can’t make head nor tail of this world when we try to teach them that just because some hits you doesn’t mean you hit them back, that you should show compassion and forgiveness, etc etc – to then see grown-ups hanging someone on the nightly news.

because some one hits you… as opposed to some.

    Yeah.

I’m continuing on my media unaware journey. I haven’t seen the footage, and I don’t care to see it either. I think I started this journey two years ago when “Schapelle Corby – Australia Decides” was considered a television event. The rage I felt inside me with TV decision makers at that point has long gone, but it’s TV like this that reminds me that, as humans, we can be horrible animals sometimes.

    Wow. Thanks for that link.

I worry that when I finally get to move back to America, that it won’t….be there anymore. The politics there are killing the States that I remember.

Living in another country and having the slightly more distant news perspective, I can’t believe that…well, I just can’t believe it.

Yikes. I dunno if they’re airing the actual footage here, because I’ve been avoiding the news. They tend not to (except Fox News maybe) be too graphic up heah but you never know.

P.S. YAY on feeling the baby move! Er, bit of a non-sequitor, I know. Blame the tequila.

P.P.S. I still have a good feeling about the baby/financials. IN FACT, I will go out on a limb and say: expect good news soon! By March-ish!

P.P.P.S. (GOD! Blame the fucking tequila, seriously) Did you ever get the blanket? Because I’m home and can receive it now. And send it to you. And whatnot.

P.P.P.P.S. Failed the farking work verification! Argh! It’s like blogger KNOWS I’ve been drinking!

excellent article, thx for the link.

Badger – you’re optimism is actually buoying me up. Thought you should know! It turns out one of the partners refuses to run the business in a standard hospitality fashion, i.e. cash. So it turns out, the cafe will probably have turned over a million dollars in its first year, but not make a profit. Chef and the other partner – I feel – are growing increasingly frustrated with this and it will come to a head shortly. This may be tied to your thoughts from afar about a change in prospects.

I LOVE it when the tequila talks.

Do you know how many word verifications I fail without any alcohol to blame at all?

I haven’t organised the blanket, so if it’s not too much of a hassle I may reinstate communications and use you as my carrier! Will let you know.

Thank you for the link, a very insightful read. I, like many, was absolutely appalled to see the footage over and over and over again. I was actually quite shocked to wake up and learn he had been hanged. I had many mixed feelings about the execution, but it came down to a complete and utter disappointment in the entire human race in general.

That is a great article. I didn’t see the news coverage of it because I am so appalled by the legalised hanging of anyone that I would have created an unholy scene in my loungeroom. Thanks for pointing me to that link.
